An NRI defined as a person born in India but currently not residing in India as per the Foreign Exchange Management Act (1999). There are different acts and policies applicable for NRIs from those residing in the country.
A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) is defined as a person whose parents hail from India and have a valid Indian citizenship.
As per the regulations, NRIs and PIOs are eligible to open, maintain, and hold a bank account from an authorized dealer i.e a bank authorized to deal in foreign currencies in India without prior approval from RBI with the exception being individuals residing in Bangladesh and Pakistan who need RBIs approval for the same.
